New Heaven & New Earth
Revelation 17–22What happens in Revelation 17–22
Revelation 17-22 brings the entire Bible to its breathtaking conclusion. What began in a garden ends in a city. What sin destroyed, grace rebuilds - bigger, better, and permanent.
Chapter 17 unveils Babylon the Great, described as a woman riding a scarlet beast, drunk with the blood of the saints. She represents the seductive power of human empire. Chapter 18 announces her fall: Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! Merchants weep because no one buys their cargo anymore.
Chapter 19 erupts in triumphant worship: Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns! The marriage supper of the Lamb is announced. Then heaven opens, and Jesus rides out on a white horse. His name is Faithful and True and King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The beast and false prophet are thrown into the lake of fire.
Chapter 20 describes Satan bound for a thousand years while Christ and His saints reign. After the thousand years, Satan is released, quickly defeated, and thrown into the lake of fire forever. The Great White Throne judgment follows: the dead are judged, and anyone not in the Book of Life faces the lake of fire. Death itself is destroyed.
Chapters 21-22 unveil the new heaven and new earth. The New Jerusalem descends from heaven. God Himself announces He will dwell with His people. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. The city has streets of gold, gates of pearl, the river of the water of life, and the tree of life. There is no temple because God and the Lamb ARE the temple. No sun because God is the light.
The Bible ends with Jesus saying Yes, I am coming soon and the Spirit and Bride saying Come! The story that began with God walking with humanity in Eden ends with God dwelling among humanity forever.
Key takeaways

- The Bible ends with an open invitation: whoever is thirsty, let him come and take the free gift of the water of life
A verse to carry
He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”Revelation 21:5 (WEB)
Something to sit with
Revelation ends with God saying 'I am making everything new.' Think about what you most need God to make new in your life. How does knowing that God's ultimate plan is complete restoration give you hope for what feels unrepairable right now?
Did you know?
The word 'Hallelujah' appears in the New Testament only in Revelation 19 - four times! It means 'Praise the Lord!' in Hebrew.
