Isaac Born & Abraham's Test
Genesis 20–26What happens in Genesis 20–26
After the destruction of Sodom, Abraham again told a king (Abimelech) that Sarah was his sister, repeating the same fearful lie from earlier. But God protected Sarah and warned Abimelech in a dream. Then the impossible happened: Sarah gave birth to Isaac, whose name means 'laughter,' because both Abraham and Sarah had laughed when God promised them a son in their old age. But tension grew between Isaac and Ishmael, and God told Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away. Though it grieved Abraham deeply, God promised to make Ishmael into a great nation too, and He provided for Hagar and her son in the wilderness.
The most dramatic moment came when God tested Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac, the son of the promise, on Mount Moriah. Abraham obeyed, trusting that God could even raise Isaac from the dead. As he raised the knife, the Angel of the Lord stopped him: 'Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.' God provided a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute sacrifice, and Abraham named the place 'The Lord Will Provide.' The episode points forward to God's ultimate provision of a substitute in Christ (Hebrews 11:17-19, John 1:29). After Sarah died at age 127, Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah to bury her. Then Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac from his relatives, and God led the servant directly to Rebekah, showing His faithful guidance. Isaac and Rebekah married, but she was barren for twenty years until Isaac prayed, and God gave them twin sons: Esau and Jacob.

The servant recognized God's faithful guidance in every detail. God leads those who seek His will.
Something to sit with
Abraham was willing to give God the thing he loved most. What is the 'Isaac' in your life, the thing hardest to surrender to God?
Did you know?
Isaac was old enough to carry the firewood up the mountain himself, showing he was not a helpless infant in the story.
