Born Again & Living Water
John 1–6What happens in John 1–6
John's Gospel opens unlike any other, not with a birth story or genealogy, but with a cosmic declaration: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.' Jesus is not merely a prophet or teacher, He is the eternal Word through whom all things were created, who became flesh and 'made his dwelling among us.' John the Baptist identifies Jesus as 'the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,' and Jesus begins gathering disciples.
Jesus' first miracle at the wedding in Cana, turning water into wine, signals that the old is giving way to something new and abundant. He cleanses the temple, declaring it 'my Father's house.' Then comes one of the Bible's most famous conversations: Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler, comes to Jesus at night. Jesus tells him, 'You must be born again', physical birth isn't enough; spiritual rebirth through the Spirit is essential. This conversation contains the Bible's most quoted verse: 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.'
Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well and offers her 'living water' that eternally satisfies. He heals a royal official's son and a paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda, then claims equality with God, sparking fierce opposition. Chapter 6 records the feeding of the 5,000 (the only miracle in all four Gospels) and Jesus walking on water. Afterward, Jesus delivers His stunning 'Bread of Life' discourse: 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.' Many followers turn away, finding His teaching too hard. Jesus asks the Twelve, 'You don't want to leave too, do you?' Peter responds with one of the great confessions: 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.'
Key takeaways
- Jesus is not just a great teacher, He is God the eternal Word who became human to dwell among us.
- Being 'born again' means spiritual rebirth that only God's Spirit can produce, it's not about trying harder but being made new.
- Jesus offers 'living water' and 'bread of life', He alone can satisfy the deepest hunger and thirst of the human soul.
- John 3:16 is the gospel in one sentence: God's love, God's gift, human belief, eternal life.
A verse to carry
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”John 6:68-69 (WEB)
When many disciples left because the teaching was too hard, Jesus asked the Twelve if they'd leave too. Peter's answer is not 'we understand everything' but 'where else would we go?' Sometimes faith means staying when you don't fully understand, because there's no better alternative.
Something to sit with
Jesus told the Samaritan woman that He offers 'living water' that eternally satisfies. What are you trying to drink from right now that isn't satisfying, and what would it look like to come to Jesus for the 'living water' instead?
