Last Supper & Prayer

John 13–17

What happens in John 13–17

These five chapters take place in a single evening, the night before Jesus dies. While the other Gospels record the Last Supper briefly, John devotes five full chapters to what Jesus said and did in the upper room. This is Jesus at His most intimate, preparing His closest followers for life without His physical presence.

The evening begins with a shocking act: Jesus, the Son of God, wraps a towel around His waist and washes the disciples' dirty feet. Peter protests, this is servant's work! But Jesus insists: 'Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.' The foot washing is both a picture of spiritual cleansing and a model of servant leadership. 'I have set you an example,' Jesus says, 'that you should do as I have done for you.' The greatest must become the servant of all.

Jesus then announces that one of them will betray Him. The disciples look around in confusion. Jesus identifies Judas by giving him a piece of bread, and Judas slips out into the night. John adds a haunting detail: 'And it was night.' With Judas gone, Jesus begins His most extensive teaching, sometimes called the 'Upper Room Discourse.'

Jesus gives a 'new commandment': love one another as He has loved them. This isn't just being nice, it's sacrificial love, the kind that lays down its life. He promises that the world will know they are His disciples by this love. He comforts them with words that have sustained believers for two thousand years: 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms.' He is going to prepare a place for them.

Thomas asks, 'Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?' Jesus gives one of His most definitive statements: 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' This is an exclusive claim, Jesus is not one path among many, but the only path to God.

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit, called the 'Advocate' or 'Counselor', who will come after Jesus leaves. The Spirit will teach them, remind them of Jesus' words, convict the world of sin, and guide them into all truth. Believers will not be left as orphans. Using the image of a vine and branches, Jesus teaches that fruitful living requires staying connected to Him: 'Apart from me you can do nothing.' He warns of persecution but promises peace: 'In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.'

Chapter 17 is often called Jesus' 'High Priestly Prayer', the longest recorded prayer of Jesus. He prays for Himself (that the Father would glorify Him through the cross), for His disciples (that the Father would protect them and sanctify them by the truth), and for all future believers (that they would be one, just as the Father and Son are one). This prayer reveals the deepest desires of Jesus' heart on the eve of His death: unity among His people, their protection from evil, and that the world would believe through their testimony.

Key takeaways

A verse to carry

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
John 14:27 (WEB)

Something to sit with

Jesus said the world will know we are His disciples by our love for one another. If someone watched your family or friend group for a week, what evidence of this kind of love would they see?

Did you know?

The Greek word for 'Advocate' (parakletos) was a legal term for someone called to stand beside you in court, like a defense attorney. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would be our permanent defender.
