Jesus Is Greater

Hebrews 1–7

What happens in Hebrews 1–7

Hebrews 1-7 builds a relentless case for the supremacy of Jesus Christ. The letter opens by declaring that God, who spoke through prophets in the past, has now spoken finally and completely through His Son, who is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being. The author then demonstrates that Jesus is superior to angels, to Moses, and to the entire Levitical priesthood.

Chapter 1 establishes Christ's deity: He sustains all things by His powerful word and, after making purification for sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Chapters 3-4 compare Jesus to Moses, Moses was faithful as a servant in God's house, but Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. The warning is urgent: the Israelites who heard God's voice in the wilderness failed to enter His rest because of unbelief, and the same danger threatens those who hear the gospel and harden their hearts.

Chapter 4 introduces the powerful image of God's word as a living, double-edged sword that penetrates to the division of soul and spirit. Chapter 5-7 presents Jesus as a high priest in the order of Melchizedek, not from the tribe of Levi but from an eternal, superior priesthood. Melchizedek, the mysterious priest-king of Salem who blessed Abraham, foreshadowed Christ's eternal priesthood: without recorded beginning or end, he serves as a type of the Son of God who lives forever to intercede for His people.

Key takeaways

A verse to carry

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Something to sit with

Hebrews 4:12 says God's word exposes the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Is there an area of your life where you sense God's word is speaking to you but you have been slow to respond?
