Revelation 1–7

What happens in Revelation 1–7

Revelation opens with a bang: 'The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.' This is not primarily a book of scary predictions, it is the unveiling of Jesus Christ in His full glory. John, exiled on the island of Patmos for his faith, receives an overwhelming vision of the risen Christ: eyes like blazing fire, voice like rushing waters, face shining like the sun. John falls at His feet 'as though dead,' and Jesus places His hand on him: 'Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!'

Chapters 2-3 contain seven letters to seven real churches in Asia Minor, each tailored to that church's specific situation. Ephesus had lost its first love despite sound doctrine. Smyrna faced poverty and persecution but was spiritually rich. Pergamum held firm under Roman pressure but tolerated false teaching. Thyatira had love and service but allowed a false prophetess. Sardis had a reputation for being alive but was actually dead. Philadelphia had little strength but had kept Christ's word and would be kept from the hour of trial. Laodicea was lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, and Jesus stood outside knocking.

Chapter 4 transports John into the throne room of heaven. God sits on the throne, surrounded by twenty-four elders and four living creatures who never stop crying 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come!' The entire scene pulses with worship.

Chapter 5 introduces the central drama: a scroll sealed with seven seals that no one in heaven or earth can open. John weeps, until one of the elders says 'the Lion of the tribe of Judah has triumphed.' But when John looks, he sees not a lion but a Lamb 'looking as if it had been slain.' This is the heart of Revelation: Jesus conquers not through raw power but through sacrificial death. Heaven erupts: 'Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!'

Chapters 6-7 begin the seal judgments. The four horsemen ride: conquest, war, famine, and death. Martyrs under the altar cry 'How long?' The sixth seal brings cosmic upheaval, the great day of wrath has come, and who can withstand it? Chapter 7 pauses the action to show two groups: 144,000 sealed from the twelve tribes of Israel, and a countless multitude from every nation standing before the throne in white robes, washed in the blood of the Lamb.

Key takeaways

A verse to carry

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3:20 (WEB)

Something to sit with

Jesus told the church at Laodicea they were lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. He would rather they be one or the other. Take an honest look at your spiritual temperature right now. Are you on fire for God, cold and distant, or somewhere in the middle? What would it take to become 'hot' again?
