Noah, Flood & Babel
Genesis 5–11What happens in Genesis 5–11
As generations passed from Adam, humanity grew more and more wicked. Genesis 6:5 says every inclination of the human heart was 'only evil all the time.' God was grieved, but one man, Noah, was righteous and walked faithfully with God. God commanded Noah to build a massive ark and told him exactly how to build it. Noah obeyed completely over a long period of time. God brought the animals to the ark exactly as He commanded, Noah's family of eight went aboard, and God Himself shut the door.
The Flood brought sweeping judgment on the world of Noah's day. The waters prevailed for 150 days before receding. When Noah's family finally stepped onto dry land, Noah built an altar and worshipped God. The Lord made a covenant with Noah, placing a rainbow in the sky as His promise never to destroy the earth with a flood again. But sin was still in the human heart. At the Tower of Babel, people united in pride to build a tower to make a name for themselves rather than glorifying God and filling the earth as He commanded. God confused their languages and scattered them across the earth, fulfilling His original command. The genealogy from Shem leads directly to Abram, showing God's plan continuing through one family line.
Key takeaways
- God judges sin seriously, but always provides a way of salvation for those who trust Him.
- Noah's obedience over a long period of time shows that faithfulness means obeying God even when no one else does.
- The rainbow covenant shows God keeps His promises, He is faithful even when people are not.
- Human pride (Babel) always fails, God's purposes cannot be stopped by human ambition.
A verse to carry
Yahweh smelled the pleasant aroma. Yahweh said in his heart, “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake because the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth. I will never again strike every living thing, as I have done. While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not cease.”Genesis 8:21-22 (WEB)
Even after the Flood, God acknowledged that human hearts are still evil from youth. Yet He shows grace by sustaining creation, seasons, harvests, day and night continue because of God's faithfulness.
Something to sit with
Noah obeyed God in building the ark while the world around him ignored God's warning. What does Noah's faithfulness teach us about trusting God when obedience feels lonely?
Did you know?
Noah's ark was roughly 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet tall, that's bigger than a football field and could hold over 500 railroad cars worth of cargo!
